There are some moments in life that you dream about long before they ever happen. Photographing my best friend’s surprise proposal was one of them.
I still remember being in the sixth grade, sitting next to Brittany in class, completely unaware of how much life we’d end up sharing together. From bonding over Jump 5 to visiting one another from different countries and states, somewhere along the way “best friend” stopped feeling like a big enough title. She became my sister in every way that matters.
We’ve grown up side by side through awkward middle school phases, late-night conversations, heartbreaks, celebrations, big dreams, bigger laughs, and countless memories that have shaped who we are. Even though we’ve spent most of our friendship living in different places, we’ve still managed to walk through so many seasons of life together that it’s honestly hard to remember a time without her.
So when Ryan messaged me asking if I would fly to Vancouver to photograph his surprise proposal, there wasn’t a decision to make.
The answer was always yes.
It didn’t matter that it was the middle of wedding season.
It didn’t matter that I’d be boarding a plane immediately after photographing a three-day wedding weekend.
Sleep could wait.
For my sister? I would’ve crossed an ocean.
Ryan had been quietly planning this suprise proposal which he called “Project Sitka” for months.
Every detail had been thoughtfully considered. Every timeline had been practiced. Every person involved knew exactly where they needed to be. The only people completely in the dark were Brittany and her parents because Ryan wanted to surprise all of them.
Her friends planned a “going away celebration” before their move to Palm Springs. Brittany’s parents thought it was a wonderful idea, but they had no idea a proposal was coming. Brittany simply believed she and Ryan were dressing up for one last fancy date around Vancouver before the big move.
Meanwhile, her closest friends and I were running around making a bouquet, chilling champagne, picking up cake, checking the group chat one last time, and trying to contain our excitement.
Somehow, the secret stayed a secret.
The day before the surprise proposal, Ryan picked me up from the airport, and we headed straight to the proposal location. Before that day, we’d never really had the chance to have a full conversation.
Within five minutes, I understood exactly why Brittany loved him.
Not only does he love her wholeheartedly, but he celebrates every part of who she is. Watching the care he put into this day made it obvious that he wasn’t just planning a proposal; he was creating a memory they’d treasure forever.
After picking up our friend Kelly, we drove to The Quay, where Brittany and Ryan had their first date.
Together, we walked through every step of the plan. We decided where I’d stand, where they’d walk, where family would hide, and even came up with a plan for Ryan to stop and tie his shoe so we had time to quietly move into position.
Everything was in place.
Kelly and I arrived early to meet everyone, and honestly, we were beyond nervous. Standing there before anyone arrived, it was impossible not to think about how many moving pieces had come together for this one moment.
Months of planning had all led here.
All for a question that would only take a few seconds to ask.
Somehow, we still had to act completely normal in front of Brittany’s parents, who had absolutely no idea what was about to happen.
I’ll never forget her mom spotting me and immediately yelling, “My daughter! My second daughter!”
My heart exploded.
Meanwhile, I scrambled through the cover story we’d created to keep everyone unsuspecting. Ryan wanted Brittany’s parents to experience the surprise right alongside her, and somehow we managed to pull it off.
Then they arrived. All of us hid in the corner of an ice cream shop, and we almost got caught. Brittany stopped to take a bandaid off her foot and tried to walk over near us to throw it away.
It’s a good thing Ryan was on point because he quickly told her he would take them and pocket them. While she was confused why Ryan would put her dirty bandaids in his pocket, she never questioned why.
They walked toward the waterfront (and Brittany was completely unaware that months of planning were about to lead to one unforgettable surprise proposal), which gave Kelly and I time to get into place to document the entire thing.
Ryan reached for her hand, he got down on one knee, and suddenly everything else disappeared.
Brittany later told me she didn’t hear anything happening around her, not even her mom screaming from behind.
She was completely locked into the moment standing in front of her.
Watching those two together, you could almost feel time slow down.
There was so much joy, so much relief, so much love.
It was one of those rare moments where every single person present knew they were witnessing something they’d remember forever.
Once the proposal was over, Brittany turned and saw me. She RAN, leaving Ryan behind, screaming “OMG LAUREN, IS THIS REAL?!”.
As a photographer, I have the incredible privilege of documenting many surprise proposals.
Every single one is meaningful and every single one is emotional, but this one will always hold a different place in my heart.
These aren’t just beautiful photographs; they’re the moment my little sister said yes.
They’re the beginning of a new family.
They’re memories that will be passed down for generations, and stories that I will tell my own children over and over again.
And somehow… I get to say I was there.
Not just as the photographer, but as someone who has loved Brittany for most of my life.
What an incredible gift that is.
Surprise proposals are always emotional, but this one will forever hold a special place in my heart. It reminded me that photographs aren’t just about preserving what happened, they’re about holding onto the people and moments that shape our lives.
Ryan, thank you for trusting me with one of the biggest moments you’ll ever experience.
And Britt…
I knew I’d cry when this day came. I just never imagined I’d be looking through my viewfinder when it happened.
I love you both more than words can say, and I cannot wait to celebrate you again at your wedding.
